Ian MacNairn is a professional ultrarunner and mountain athlete based in Calgary, Alberta. He came into the path of endurance and mountain sport by accident. His initial steps as a trail-runner announced the end of his recovery from a near-fatal accident. Ian pursued rehabilitation and running, as a health scientist, using his own case to study the transformations that occur in pursuit of ultra-endurance. Ian has continued down the trail, studying ultra-running as an anthropologist and student of medicine. He is currently a doctoral candidate exploring community in trail and ultrarunning around the world. He is an internationally published writer with articles on running, sport, culture, and exploration.

Ian has raced across Canada, the USA, Mexico, and Europe. He has won and podium-ed in numerous events from 8K to 193K. He is the record holder for numerous ultras and unsupported trail runs in Canada and abroad and is a two time ultrarunning National Champion. Ian is supported by The North Face, Smartwool, Clif Bar, Xact Nutrition, and Julbo Eyewear.
Ian MacNairn is visiting Go Fest Whistler to share a story of an unexpected mountain-running adventure that he found himself in last summer while traveling and conducting fieldwork for his doctoral research in Europe.
Come join Ian on Saturday May 20 at the Whistler The North Face as he shares what ended up being a (super rad!) first-ever attempted adventure in mountains far from home.
